2005 MEXICO, CENTRAL AMERICA, AND THE CARIBBEAN

Winter and spring ‘05 – The Sea of Cortez and Socorro

Beauport spent quite some time cruising the Sea of Cortez in Baja California. Trips to the mangroves on Isla San Jose, and to Isla Espirito Santo to dive and snorkel with sea lions at Los Islotes and to kayak at Ensenada Grande, were excursions that all on board enjoyed.

In early May, a trip to Socorro Island, one of the four islands of the Revillagigedo Archipelago in the Pacific, was very exciting. The diving and snorkeling at Socorro is spectacular and pristine sites were only a short whaler-ride away from where Beauport was anchored. Definitively, the highlight of this trip was diving with the giant manta rays. An unforgettable experience!

Summer ‘05 – San Benito Island and dry-docking

After a stop at San Benito Island which included a visit to a colony of Northern Elephant Seals, Beauport then sailed to Ensenada for a two-month visit to the dry dock. She had a complete bottom job done and is now gleaming with new paint from the hull to the top of the flying bridge. A lot of work, inside and out, was done to ready Beauport for her next adventure: down the coast of Mexico and Central America, through the Panama Canal, and on into the Caribbean.

Fall ’05– Cabo San Lucas, Socorro, Isla Isabella, Puerto Vallarta

Beauport left Ensenada on November 3rd. Another visit to the Northern Elephant Seal colony was made at San Benito Island. Making her way to Cabo San Lucas with a stop at Bahia Santa Maria, she had interesting company: a great number of sailboats participating in the annual Baja Haha race from Ensenada to Cabo, dolphins, as well as a mother Humpback and its calf!

A second trip to Socorro was made in mid-November. The guests enjoyed a variety of activities including a hike up Mt. Everman, Socorro’s active volcano, scuba diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, and swimming with a pod of wild dolphins! On November 30th, Beauport left for Los Frailes and Cabo Pulmo in the Sea of Cortez, on her way to Isla Isabella, a magnificent Bird Sanctuary with a crater lake, featured in some of Cousteau’s television specials.

March ‘04 – Ocean Futures Society

The Beauport spent the month of March, 2004, supporting Jean Michel Cousteau’s “OCEAN FUTURES SOCIETY” while shooting a series of films for Public Broadcasting Service on the “Migration of the Gray Whale from Baja California to the Arctic”.

Summer ‘04 – The Pacific Northwest’s Inside Passage

During July and August, the Beauport cruised the Pacific Northwest’s Inside Passage starting with the Gulf Islands through the Johnstone Strait up to Telegraph Cove, taking time to stop at various islands, bays, and inlets to enjoy the marine and land wildlife on the way. Several dedicated people working in the marine field were amongst our guests, one of them being Jeff Pantukhoff. Jeff established the “WHALEMAN FOUNDATION”, a non-profit oceanic organization which dedicates itself to the preservation and protection of dolphins and whales and their habitats through research, conservation, film production, and education.
